CHRONICKLE OF LEADING EVENTS 1907 The year of the State Darwin Museum's establishment. Alexander Kots' private collection of stuffed birds and mammals was moved to a laboratory of the Moscow Higher Women's College in order to use it as illustrative materials at lectures on evolutionary theory. 1909 For the first time the museum's collection was completely displayed in a lecture hall of the College. The exhibition was devoted to XII Congress of the Society of Naturalists and Doctors. 1913 The first paper on museology "Ways and Purposes of Evolutionary Theory in Reflection of the Biological Museums" by A.Kots was published. Moscow - 1913 - V.Voronov's Printing House, 43 pages. 1913 Alexander Kots donated the collection to the Moscow Higher Women's College. A.Kots was appointed director of the museum. 1913 The Laboratory of Zoopsychology was founded at the museum. Nadezhda Ladyghina-Kots (1889-1963), Alexander Kots's wife, who devoted all her life to the museum, was in charge of the Laboratory. 1914 The museum's first report "The Museum of Evolutionary History at the Moscow Higher Women's College during 1913/14" was published. 1918 The Nationalization of the museum's collections was made. A.Kots was appointed director of the State Darwin Museum. 1920 The Darwin Museum in cooperation with Soyuspushnina began to form a unique collection of variability in colour of fur-bearing animals. 1921 "Report of the Laboratory of Zoopsychology at the State Darwin Museum" was published. 1922 The museum was given the status of independent cultural and educational institution with its own staff and financing. 1926 The first Government Decree for the construction of a new building for the Darwin Museum was issued. 1928 The first edition of the Proceedings of the Laboratory of Zoopsychology at the State Darwin Museum "Adaptational Motor Abilities of the Macaque in Experiment Conditions" by N.Ladyghina-Kots was published. - The State Darwin Museum, Moscow. 1935 The monograph "Infant Ape and Human Child in Their Instincts, Emotions, Expressive Movements" by N. Ladygina-Kots was published in the Darwin Museum. This book had brought popularity in the scientific world to not only the author, but also the museum. 1946 The Decree of the Russian Federation Ministries' Council for the construction of a new museum's building was issued. 1960 The construction of a new building on 3-rd Frunze Street was begun. 1963 Moscow City Executive Committee cancelled the decision of the construction of the museum's building. 1964 A.Kots died. Vera Ignatieva was appointed director of the museum. 1967 The museum was awarded with the Honours of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation on the review of museums activities. 1968 Vera Ignatieva has managed a Decree of Moscow Council for the construction of a new building for the museum. 1971 Exhibits of the museum displayed at the Exhibition of the Hunting Trophies in Budapest (Hungary) were awarded with twelve Gold, two Bronze and three Silver medals. 1974 The construction of a new building on Vavilova Street began. 1975 The museum was awarded with the Honours of the Executive Committee of the Moscow Council for its success in scientific and education activities. 1978 The museum was awarded with "The Mark of Honour" for its efforts in propagation of natural history knowledge. 1981 Exhibits of the Darwin Museum displayed in EXPO'81 (Plovdiv, Bulgaria) were awarded Grand Prix, three gold and three silver medals. 1984 The museum was closed for public because of emergency condition of its premises. 1991 The large foreign exhibition "Animals and Bird of Russia" was held in Ankona (Italy). 1994 The Moscow Government's Decree for the construction of an additional building for the Darwin Museum was issued. The first edition of the reference book "Natural History Museums of Russia" was prepared and published by the Darwin Museum's stuff. The museum began to move to the new building in Vavilova Street. 1995 The first permanent exhibitions "History of the Darwin Museum", "The Diversity of Life on the Earth", "Microevolution" and the temporary exhibition "Collections of the State Darwin Museum" were opened. 1996 The new halls "Stages of Nature Cognition" and "Zoogeography" were opened.
The Darwin museum became the first Russian museum with the direct connection to the Internet.
The conference "Computerization in Museums" was organized at the museum (April). 1996 The Association of Natural History Museums of Russia was founded on the basis of the Section of Natural History Museums of ICOM's Russian Committee at the Constituent Conference of Russian Natural History Museums, organized in the Darwin Museum (September). 1997 A new hall "Macroevolution" was opened. Thus, at the museum's 90-th anniversary the whole permanent exhibition was completely opened. 1997 By the Decree of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation from 12/05-1997 the Darwin Museum was approved as the Scientific and Methodological Centre of Natural History Museology. 1997 In connection with the museum's 90th anniversary the staff of the museum was awarded with the Honours of Moscow Government for the considerable contribution to museology. 1997 The edition of Proceedings of the State Darwin Museum was renewed. The issue "To the 90th anniversary of the State Darwin Museum" was published. 1998 The workshop of the Association of Natural History Museums of Russia "Collecting, Preparation, Curation and Use of Natural History Collections" was organized (March). 1998 The Darwin Museum was nominated in the prestigious competition "European Museum of the Year Award", organized by European Museum Forum (Samos, Greece). 1999 The second edition of the reference book "Natural History Museums of Russia" was published. 2000 The million visitor came to the museum in its new building. 2000 The workshop of the Association Natural History Museums of Russia "The Museum at the Turn of Centuries. Experience of the Past, Glance into the Future", devoted to the 120th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Kots was organized.
